Government

Michigan’s township form of government pre-dates statehood by at least ten years. These townships were formed on an as-needed basis and often underwent changes over time. Custer Township was created in this way following the formation of Eden Township in 1874 by the Mason County Board. In the fall of 1878 it was decided the northern section of Eden should separate into a new township, resulting in Custer Township being incorporated on October 18, 1878.
